1. Microbial pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) bind to their corresponding pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) on antigen-presenting dendritic cells.
2. The PAMP/PRR interaction activates the dendritic cell enabling it to synthesize and secrete the cytokine Interleukin-12 (IL-12).

IL-12 binds to IL-12 receptors on the surface of iNKT cells and activates these cells.
